Staten Island Bridge Construction Accident

Photo of Harlan Thompson

According to the Daily News a construction accident occurred on Wednesday October 29th on Staten Island. An inspector was struck by a truck delivering asphalt at 2:45am. The truck was in reverse on a ramp near a toll plaza at the time of impact. The inspector was taken to the hospital by ambulance. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

Due to an investigation by police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration construction on the bridge was suspended for the day.

Overall construction accident deaths seem to be declining. The number of construction related deaths decreased in 2013 to three according to the Department of Buildings. In 2012 the number of construction deaths was 8. The decrease is credited to an outreach effort that emphasizes the importance of worksite safety along with increased enforcement.

The number of construction related accidents increased from 176 in 2012 to 186 in 2013. Construction related injuries also increased at about the same percentage.

While it is a huge improvement to see the number of construction related fatalities decrease so significantly, the increase in accidents and injuries is worrisome. Construction workers who experience an injury lose work time and frequently acquire significant medical bills. These can both have a negative affect on the livelihood of the worker along with their family.

Anyone who has been injured in a construction related accident should consider hiring a New York construction accident lawyer. A lawyer with experience handling construction accident cases can help provide the support needed to argue for the financial settlement deserved.
