Despite Mayor Bill de Blasio's newly launched "Vision Zero " aimed to "reduce the number of traffic fatalities to zero within 10 years, this past weekend proved to be one of the more deadly in recent memory. Various news outlets have reported that numerous pedestrians were struck by motorists in New York City.
On Saturday, January 18th at around 10:00am, a 63 - year old woman was struck by a cement truck while crossing Second Avenue and 68th Street. According to NBC New York the woman's left leg was severed below her knee and subsequently taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.
At 11:20am, Abel Tinoco, a 28 year old man driving with a suspended or revoked license struck and 68- year old Angela Hurtado when he turned left onto Grand Avenue in Elhurst. Ms. Hurtado was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Only hours earlier, at 6:35am a homeless man was fatally struck by a Ford Expedition while walking near the Union Turnpike and the Cross Island Parkway
Finally, the Gothamist reported that at around 4:45AM, a 26-year old woman was fatally struck by an ambulance while crossing 96th Street, mid block between Broadway and West-End Avenue.

The New York Post reported that according the NYPD data, the number of pedestrians hit by cars in the Big Apple this year [is] at least 11, including nine fatalities since Jan. 1 - nearly double the five pedestrians killed in all of January 2013..."
